Boston Business Journal

MC10 has tapped Tennessee Titans quarterback Matt Hasselbeck and several other pro-athletes to form a Sports Advisory Board (SAB) to help it develop the next version of its athletic performance monitoring devices. Included in this group of elite athletes is four-time ice hockey Olympic medalist Angela Ruggiero.

The Cambridge-based maker of flexible electronics will get feedback from the athletes on its sensing platform that allows for sensors to measure hydration, heart rate, muscle activity, motion, and other indicators of athletic performance. The sensors are small and nearly invisible, according to the company. (read more)

The energetic Shawn Johnson was hooked up for a livechat via the U.S. Olympic committee last week where she dished on her feelings regarding this summer’s Olympic team, the skills that scare her and some of her favorite things.

Johnson, who is hoping to make her second Olympic team this summer, also noted that she may skip May’s CoverGirl Classic to prepare for the U.S. Championships in June. In case you missed the chat, here are a few soundbites from Shawn:

On the event she’s hoping to surprise everyone on this year: “Hopefully beam.”

On training: “Training’s going really well. good days, bad days.”

On her favorite floor music: “Level 9 — Alan Jackson’s ‘Little Bitty Pretty One.’ I loved it.”

On her knee: “It just kind of has a mind of it’s own.”

On her new floor routine: “Yes, I have a new floor routine. I hope you guys like it.”

On her expectations for this summer: “I can’t set expectations or goals, but I just want to be on the team.” (read more)

Shawn Johnson Puzzles Her Future

Shawn Johnson has a lot of fans. For good reason. She is the 2007 gymnastics all-around world champion and the winner of four medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. One of those medals, on the balance beam, is gold. In 2009, she won “Dancing With the Stars.”

Shawn Johnson is the whole package. From the get-go, she has represented herself, her family and her country with class and style.

When Shawn announced almost two years ago that she was going to try to mount a comeback for the 2012 London Games, many of her fans assumed she would be a lock for the U.S. team.

Shawn has known better, and for a long time. So have many gymnastics insiders. The knee she blew out in a skiing accident celebrating her 18th birthday was going to make it that much tougher. So would the extended time off from the gym.

Now, with the London Games about 100 days away, 20-year-old Shawn is diligently working out, once more in the same West Des Moines, Iowa, gym, and again under the tutelage of coach Liang Chow. The aim is clear. The will is there. But, in a frank and revealing conversation Friday, she acknowledged she very well might not make the 2012 U.S. team.

“My biggest goal,” she said, referring to the U.S. team, “is for them to get the gold medal.

“If I am not part of the team, I have to accept that.”

Which, she said, she has, fully and completely.

“I am OK with that. It’s what’s best for the USA. It’s not what’s best for me.” (read more)

Shade Global, Sheryl Shade, Signs Representation Agreement With 2012 Olympic Gymnastics Hopeful Gabrielle Douglas

New York, NY, April 16, 2012 – SHADE GLOBAL Inc., a sports marketing and athlete representation agency in New York, announces the signing of American gymnast Gabrielle Douglas.

When Gabrielle Douglas was just three years old, her older sister taught her how to do a perfectly straight cartwheel.  By the age of four, Gabrielle had taught herself how to do a cartwheel with one hand.  Gabby began gymnastics in 2003 at the age of six and never looked back.  From the start it was clear that Gabby was going to shine in the sport.  She quickly climbed to the top, moving through the ranks and is now an international elite gymnast who is a strong contender for a spot on the 2012 Olympic Gymnastics Team.

In 2008, Gabrielle competed as a level 10 gymnast.  She earned high scores and by the end of the year she had qualified for her first elite national competition.  In 2010, Gabby competed at the 2010 Junior U.S. National Championships where she placed 4th all-around, won a silver medal on balance beam and earned a spot on the 2010-2011 Junior National Team.

In October of 2010, Gabby left her long time gym in Virginia to train at Chow’s Gymnastics in Des Moines, Iowa under legendary coach Liang Qiao (Chow), one of the world’s top coaches, alongside Olympic gold medalist Shawn Johnson.  She was assigned two premier international assignments: the 2010 Pan American Games and 2011 City of Jesolo Trophy.  She won a gold medal on uneven bars at Pan Ams and took 4th all-around at the City of Jesolo competition.  Gabby made her senior debut at the 2011 U.S. National Championships, where she won a bronze medal on the uneven bars, and was named to the Senior National Team.  She was later selected to be a member of the 2011 World Championship Team, helping to bring home a team gold medal!

Gabby competed as an alternate at the 2012 AT&T American Cup at Madison Square Garden in NYC, the first international competition of the Olympic year.  Her performance at American Cup grabbed much attention and catapulted her talent into the spotlight.  Gabby is considered a top prospect for the 2012 Olympic Games in London. She has her heart and mind focused on making the Team and representing USA. (read more)
