Ashley Wagner was born on a U.S. Army Base in Heidelberg, Germany, where her father was stationed at the time. She began skating at age five in Eagle River, Alaska. Ashley began to show promise early and won a gold medal at her first competition. Wagner watched American Tara Lipinski win the gold medal at the 1998 Winter Olympics, which inspired her to want to compete in the Olympics, too.
In the ‘06-‘07 season, Wagner made her Junior Grand Prix debut by winning the Junior Grand Prix events in Courchevel, France, and the Netherlands. Her wins qualified her for the Junior Grand Prix Final in Bulgaria, where she won the silver medal.
The first senior level event that Ashley competed in was the 2008 United States Figure Skating Championships in St. Paul, Minnesota, where she won the overall bronze medal. Ashley trains at SC of Wilmington with former skater and renowned coach, Priscilla Hill.
