Golden Girl Shawn Johnson Wants Kids Up, Out and Active

KUSA-TV (NBC9 Colorado)- Johnson is an ambassador for the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and their Triple Play program. While research shows many American children become more sedentary in adolescence, Triple Play is aimed at reversing the trend by motivating them to be more physically active.

The Triple Play program was launched in collaboration with the Department of Health and Human Services with support from The Coca-Cola Company and Kraft Foods Inc. Program organizers say even a few minutes of extra activity each day can add up over time to a healthier weight and establish a pattern of behavior that continues into adulthood.

Triple Play is designed to provide young people ages 6-18 with a basic knowledge of nutrition, exercise and teamwork so they can learn to make positive food choices, enjoy sustained physical activity and develop a sense of self-reliance.

"So many kids, especially girls, end up spending more time shopping or at the food court in the mall than working out in the gym, so it's encouraging to find programs like Triple Play that turn that turn that around," said Johnson. (read more)

Skating and Gymnastics Event Coming Back to Rapid City

Rapid City Journal

“I love traveling to schools and talking to kids…" Johnson said Tuesday.  "I am not used to being that person (who is the center of attention). I remember being the elementary student or high school student who saw people come into our school and was star-struck."

Many students in the St. Thomas More gymnasium were star-struck Tuesday, when the Olympic gold medalist made a surprise visit to their school. Johnson was in the city to promote the Progressive Skating & Gymnastics Spectacular, which will take place at Rushmore Plaza Civic Center on Oct. 30.

The spectacular brings together top skaters and gymnasts with Olympic experience for a combination show of the two sports on the same floor. The event will take place on the ice arena floor with gymnasts including Nastia Liukin, Raj Bhavsar and Johnson, and figure skaters Elvis Stojko, Michael Weiss and Emily Hughes. Ashley Tisdale, of "High School Musical," will perform at the show. (read more)
