Olympian Shannon Miller shares motivation with Edmond young professionals
Gymnast tells Edmond’s young professionals they must persevere
By John A. Williams- The Oklahoman
Shannon Miller is the most decorated American gymnast, male or female, in history. With her last Olympic competition nearly 13 years behind her, Miller spends part of her time as a motivational speaker. This week she spoke to the members of the Edmond Young Professionals Club about leadership and the fundamental aspects of success.
"You will certainly face adversity, but you must persevere,” Miller said. "The way you handle yourself when you’re faced with obstacles will help others pursue excellence as well.”
A few months before the 1992 Olympics, Miller broke and dislocated her elbow. It appeared her Olympic hopes were over, but Miller surprised doctors and coaches by coming back to compete in the compulsory portion of the 1992 Nationals. She went on to win two silver and three bronze medals in the Olympics.
In addition to working out 40 hours a week, Miller said having a dream to work toward kept her motivated as a young gymnast.
"Commitment is important, but you have to have something you are committed to,” she said. "Goal-setting was an important part of my gymnastics career and now it’s a critical part of my life.” (read more)
