Sheriff John Rutherford and Olympic Gold Medalist Shannon Miller welcomed 650 registered participants to the 1st Shannon Miller Kids Marathon this past weekend.

The Shannon Miller Foundation is dedicated to fighting childhood obesity through physical fitness and proper nutrition.

“Childhood obesity is an incredibly complex problem. My foundation aims to target two areas specifically; physical fitness and proper nutrition,” said Miller. “Through the SM Kids Marathon I want our youth to find out how much fun fitness can be, as well as, gain the confidence and work ethic that athletics provides.”

The 12 week program to get youth involved with physical fitness and making healthy lifestyle choices began with a bang. Kid’s ages 7-14 ran or walked 25 miles over a 12 week period. (read more)
