BACKGROUND

As two of the top male gymnasts in the world, Paul and his brother Morgan announced their plan to train for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing in 2007. This will be potentially Paul’s third Olympic Games.

At the 2004 Athens Summer Olympic Games, Paul became the first American male ever to win the Olympic All-Around medal in gymnastics. Capturing headlines around the world after suffering a fall on vault, Paul pulled off one of the greatest comebacks in Olympic gymnastics history with spectacular performances on the parallel bars and the high bar. Paul also won the Silver in the Men’s High Bar and, along with his twin brother Morgan, led the U.S. Men’s team to the Silver Medal in the Team competition.

In 2003 Paul made history by becoming the first-ever U.S. man to win the World All-Around title in Gymnastics. The U.S. Men’s Team won Silver and Paul also shared floor exercise Gold.

Paul graduated with a 3.9 GPA in June 2007, from the Ohio State University's Fisher College of Business in Accounting.

Hamm Still Man to Beat

Hamm Still Man to Beat

ESPN, HOUSTON -- Whenever Paul Hamm mentions Beijing or the Olympics, he's quick to throw in an "if."  As in, "If I qualify." Or, "If I make the team."  Uh, Paul, have you seen the scores you've been putting up since you came back? Not only are the other Americans expecting you to be with them at the Beijing Olympics, most figure you'll be going as the U.S. champion.

Four years after winning his last national title, Hamm is a heavy favorite to pick up another when the U.S. gymnastics championships begin Thursday night. Never mind that he took 2½ years off after winning the gold medal at the Athens Olympics. He's routed the competition everywhere he's gone this year, and most expect more of the same at nationals.

"He's like the Terminator in this sport. If he hits, it's not going to be possible to touch him he's so good," Jonathan Horton said after Wednesday's workout on the competition floor. "I always say I don't go to any competition to finish second. But if I don't beat Paul, I won't be upset at all. He's incredible." (read more)

Phinney, Hamms Related 2008 Dreams

Phinney, Hamms Related 2008 Dreams

CHICAGO (AP) -- Taylor Phinney remembers watching the 2004 Olympics and spotting gymnasts Paul and Morgan Hamm.

"I was like, 'Oh, they have red hair, and they're from Wisconsin,'" Phinney said Monday. "'That's interesting.'"

Little did he know.

Turns out, the cycling phenom and two of the world's best gymnasts have a bit more in common than their Olympic ambitions. Like their family tree.

Though the three met for the first time Monday at the U.S. Olympic Committee summit, they're related. And not in that "83rd cousin of an aunt twice removed" way that Barack Obama and Brad Pitt are related.

Phinney's great-great-grandfather on his mother's side, Russell Carpenter, and the Hamms' great-grandfather on their mother's side, Elbert Carpenter, were brothers, revealed Connie Carpenter-Phinney, herself a 1984 gold medalist in cycling.

Which makes the three Beijing hopefuls cousins, even if it's a bit on the distant side.

Yeah, some pretty good genes in that family.

Paul Hamm is Back

For Paul Hamm, everything old feels new again.

The 2004 Olympic gold all-around champion officially begins defense of his title at the Winter Cup Challenge in Las Vegas this weekend. The event, held Thursday and Saturday, will be Hamm's first all-around competition since the Athens Games.

"I'm putting the final touches on my routines," says Hamm, 25, attempting to make his third Olympic team along with his twin brother Morgan, who has been sidelined since October after surgery to repair a torn right pectoralis. "I've been focusing more so on all six events in the last month, pushing my body to get used to doing longer routines and doing them all in one day.

"My body feels good. It should be fun. I am ready."

Hamm will be joined in competition by 2007 U.S. all-around champion David Durante and 2006-07 Tyson American Cup champion Jonathan Horton, who finished fourth in the all-around at the 2007 world championships.
