The prologue win was Phinney's first win in the Trek-Livestrong kit. The photo of Phinney is from this year's Tour of the Gila.

The four-day race, held since 1949, has been won in the past by Andy Schleck, Bradley Wiggins, Kim Kirchen and Alex Zulle.

In a Twitter post after the race, Phinney said he dedicated the win to retired multi-sport legend Steve Larsen, who died Tuesday evening in Bend, Oregon.

The technical prologue course was a good fit for Phinney, the reigning world champion at the 4k pursuit.
